Day 3 Wednesday 1st February Shira 1 3,508m to Moir Hut 4,166m. Distance 9.4km
The morning was nice and clear and we got our first proper glimpse of Kilimanjaro – we all realised now what we had taken on. Even at this elevation it still looked big but what an amazing back drop to take a morning wash.
The trek from Shira 1 Camp (3508m) to Moir Hut (4166m) across the Shira Plateau was very different to the day before. The sun was shining, we had music going and spirits were up. We passed through Fischer camp and plenty of areas were previous hikers had stacked stones as a lucky charm for their ascent.
This day was tough – I ran out of water (consuming 4 litres) with still an hour of hiking to go and the mileage was starting to take its toll on many others in the group.
Eventually we got to camp and enjoyed a great lunch before refuelling and undertaking our first acclimatisation walk in the afternoon to 4305m on the ridgeline. Sadly the sun disappeared, and the wind was up making a chilly night. None of us liked this camp site, it was bare, rocky and felt like a wind tunnel! Also not helped by the fact that at this height many of us were suffering mild headaches from the altitude. Total distance we covered was 9.4km
