The lead in to Boston this year was really tough for me. Training had been disrupted by a back injury, a nagging knee injury and the usual ski holidays! So, in a way I was pleased to just make it to the start line.

It was very different weather to year ago however. Out at Hopkinton it was 20 degrees and there was very little wind. Instead of using the tents to shelter from the rain, this year I was sheltering from the heat.

I started out at a pace to get me in under 3:20, but after 5 miles I knew I couldn’t hold that pace in the heat so I had to slow up. I felt pretty tired throughout but just tried to hang on to a decent pace.

After Heartbreak Hill I knew I couldn’t make it but you get such a buzz after the hills as you know its all down hill to Boston apart from a few minor twists.

It made a massive difference turning on to Boylston in the sunshine but I just couldn’t sneak in under the 3:25 qualifying time. Will have to find another race as I love being part of Boston.
